Immigrant Rights
During the Trump administration, over 5,400 children were separated from their parents. Child welfare experts say that this policy will cause lifelong harm to the families that have been involved in these cruel separations.  In many cases the immigrants seeking asylum have no legal representation, no understanding of the immigration process and little or no financial resources to pay for an attorney. Many of these migrants left their homes in Latin America due to violence from gangs. They are now stuck in a backlog of thousands of people waiting to be processed through the US asylum process. This is also while many have been deported due to the Covid -19 pandemic.  Applicants for asylum have come to the conclusion that the last administration has left the asylum process in a smoldering wreck. What is needed is a way to train these asylum seekers to understand the immigration process, in order to take advantage of legal resources.  In addition, we could arm them with tactical information on how to re-unite with their children and how the US government is set up to re-connect them with their children. They also need to understand how to survive in the many immigrant detention centers.
